Anora Leads Oscar Wins; Streaming Starts March 17 in India

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The 97th Annual Academy Awards held on March 2, 2025, crowned the dark romantic comedy-drama Anora with five Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture award. Despite its success, the film is yet to be officially available on major streaming platforms. Jio Hotstar announced that Anora will be accessible for streaming in India starting March 17, 2025.
The anticipation for Anora is palpable among audiences who missed its theatrical run, which concluded in November 2024. “We’re excited to bring Anora to our subscribers, especially after its impressive performance at the Oscars,” a Jio Hotstar spokesperson stated.
Alongside Anora, Jio Hotstar has also confirmed the premiere of another Oscar-winning film, Wicked, set for March 22, 2025. This film secured two awards and nine nominations, further exciting fans of the Academy Awards.
In addition, the platform has several films already available, such as Dune: Part Two, which can be streamed in multiple Indian languages. The diverse offerings from Jio Hotstar reflect a growing appetite for acclaimed cinema within the Indian OTT landscape.
At this year’s Oscars, Emilia Pérez topped the nominations with 13 nods, while Wicked garnered 10 nominations across various categories. The event, held at the Dolby Theatre, recognized cinematic excellence in a year full of remarkable films.
“The Oscars this year were a beautiful celebration of storytelling and artistry,” said Emmy-winning director Steven Soderbergh. “Projects like Anora and Wicked highlight the ever-evolving landscape of filmmaking.”
This year’s accolades for Anora also include Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Actress for Mikey Madison, who earned her first Oscar for her leading role in the critically acclaimed film. Baker noted, “Winning these awards is a dream come true. It reaffirms our team’s hard work and determination.”
The film’s success at the Oscars is reflective of its compelling narrative. Anora tells the story of a young sex worker in Brooklyn who, after impulsively marrying the son of a Russian oligarch, faces challenges looming over her fairytale romance.
Overall, Anora has received accolades not only at the Oscars but also at other prestigious award ceremonies, further confirming its status as a remarkable film within contemporary cinema. It previously won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and notable awards from the Producers Guild of America and Writers Guild of America.
As viewers await the film’s streaming release, the buzz surrounding these Oscar-winning titles suggests a promising future for cinematic appreciation and engagement among Indian audiences.
