Antoine Griezmann, the renowned French footballer, has announced his retirement from international football after a distinguished 10-year career with the French national team. The announcement was made on Monday via a social media post where Griezmann, 33, expressed deep emotions about his decision.

Griezmann has been a crucial part of the French national side, featuring in three major finals. He was instrumental in France’s journey to the Euro 2016 final, which ended in a defeat on home soil, and was a key player in the team that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Most recently, Griezmann contributed significantly to France’s campaign in the 2022 World Cup, where they were defeated in the final.

In his statement, Griezmann said, “It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent, tricolor adventure, and see you soon.” He continued, “After ten incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it’s time for me to turn the page and make room for the new generation.”

The forward, who currently plays for Atlético Madrid, made his debut for France in March 2014 during a 2-0 friendly victory over the Netherlands. His international career has been overseen by Didier Deschamps, who has managed the national team since 2012.

Reflecting on his time with the national team, Griezmann remarked, “Wearing this shirt has been an honour and a privilege … I leave the France national team with a sense of pride and gratitude. I had the honour of representing our country, and the chance to experience extraordinary moments, like becoming a world champion.”

Griezmann played a total of 137 matches for France, scoring 44 goals. His historical performance during the Euro 2016 tournament earned him the Golden Boot after scoring six goals. While the tournament concluded with a loss to Portugal, it set the stage for his major contributions to France’s subsequent World Cup victory.

During the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Griezmann’s performance was exemplary, helping lead France to their second World Cup title. He scored four goals throughout the tournament, including a penalty in the final against Croatia, where France won 4-2.

His role evolved over the years, and by the 2022 World Cup, Griezmann was playing in a deeper, midfield position, supporting newer talents like Kylian Mbappe. Despite the shift, his contribution remained vital as France reached another final, ultimately losing to Argentina in a penalty shootout.

Griezmann is ranked fourth on the all-time goalscorer list for the French men’s team. Only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram have surpassed his tally of 137 appearances. Griezmann’s club career continues with him recently starting in a LaLiga match for Atlético Madrid.
