Arizona Cardinals Secure Backup Quarterback Amid Kyler Murray’s Injury
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals have signed quarterback Jeff Driskel to their practice squad following the injury of starter Kyler Murray. Murray was placed on injured reserve this week as the team aims to ensure he fully recovers from an ankle injury incurred in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans.
Driskel, 32, has a history with the Cardinals, having spent part of 2023 on the practice squad while Murray was recovering from a torn ACL. He brings significant experience to the team, having played in 25 NFL games, including 12 starts.
With Murray sidelined, Jacoby Brissett has taken over as the starting quarterback. During his three games as the starter, Brissett has led the Cardinals to a victory over the Dallas Cowboys, where the team showed improvement, particularly on defense. Coach Jonathan Gannon emphasized the importance of keeping Brissett healthy given the team’s current quarterback situation.
Driskel’s capabilities include 2,394 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in his career. He has also demonstrated a versatile playing style with 417 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. His familiarity with the team makes him a strategic choice as Arizona navigates this challenging period.
The Cardinals will also rely on Kedon Slovis, who is currently on the roster as the third-string quarterback. Coach Gannon stated the importance of Driskel’s experience, particularly as the team hopes to remain competitive and chase a playoff spot.
Arizona will need to address how to handle potential injuries to Brissett during this crucial stretch leading up to the playoffs. The discussion surrounding the backup quarterback strategy is ongoing, as the team balances the need for an experienced backup with their current roster limitations.
