Assassin's Creed Shadows Feudal Japan Gameplay

MONTREAL, Canada — After years of anticipation, Ubisoft‘s Assassin's Creed Shadows is set to deliver a long-awaited journey to feudal Japan, blending the franchise’s signature action, stealth, and RPG elements with a captivating new setting. The game, developed by Ubisoft Quebec, introduces dual protagonists—Yasuke, a historical African samurai, and Naoe, a fictional female shinobi—as they navigate the turbulent unification of 16th-century Japan.

Creative director Jonathan Dumont emphasized the game’s theme of unity, reflecting the historical backdrop of Japan’s unification period. “This game has a message about unity and fighting for those who cannot,” Dumont said. “Both characters represent the importance of community and taking care of each other during a time of unrest.”

The game’s open world, set across nine provinces, offers a mix of stealth, combat, and exploration. Players can switch between Yasuke and Naoe, each with distinct abilities. Yasuke excels in melee combat, while Naoe specializes in stealth, utilizing tools like a grappling hook and smoke bombs. The dynamic between the two characters is central to the narrative, with their growth and bond driving the story forward.

Combat in Shadows has been refined, with a greater emphasis on dodging, parrying, and strategic strikes. Stealth mechanics have also been enhanced, incorporating elements from Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell series, such as a visibility meter and the ability to go prone. These improvements aim to balance the game’s action and stealth elements, offering players a more immersive experience.

The game also introduces a village-building feature, allowing players to customize their hideout with structures, decorations, and pets. This addition, reminiscent of Animal Crossing, provides a cozy contrast to the game’s intense action sequences.

Despite some technical quirks and occasional combat challenges, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is shaping up to be a solid entry in the franchise. With its rich worldbuilding, dual protagonists, and refined gameplay, the game aims to satisfy long-time fans while delivering a fresh take on the series’ formula.
