HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros are reportedly keeping the door open for a potential reunion with All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, despite a series of offseason moves that appeared to close the chapter on his return. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Astros are still considering a scenario that would involve shifting players to accommodate Bregman, though the team remains pessimistic about their chances.

Bregman, who declined a six-year, $156 million offer from the Astros earlier this winter, has at least two serious offers on the table, though the teams involved remain undisclosed. The Astros’ interest in re-signing Bregman comes despite their recent acquisition of first baseman Christian Walker and the trade for Isaac Paredes, which pushed Paredes to third base. Nightengale suggested that Houston could move Paredes to second base and shift Jose Altuve to left field to make room for Bregman.

Altuve, a longtime Astros cornerstone, has seen his defensive metrics decline in recent years. According to Statcast, his range and arm strength have both been rated in the bottom percentiles of the league. Despite this, the Astros have reportedly considered the unconventional move of placing him in left field, a position he has never played in the majors.

Financial constraints also play a role in the Astros’ decision-making. Owner Jim Crane has publicly stated his reluctance to exceed last year’s $244 million payroll, though the team’s actions this offseason suggest they are willing to make exceptions for key players. Signing Bregman would likely push Houston over the $241 million luxury tax threshold, a move the team has been hesitant to make.

Bregman’s leadership and clubhouse presence have been widely praised, and the Astros are more familiar with his value than any other team. However, the 30-year-old infielder has drawn interest from multiple clubs, including the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox, in particular, have reportedly viewed Bregman as a potential second baseman, a position he has not played regularly since his college days.

As the offseason progresses, the Astros face a difficult decision: whether to invest heavily in a player who has been a cornerstone of their success or to move forward with their current roster. For now, the door remains ajar, but time is running out for a reunion.
