To mark the historical significance of Juneteenth, a company has introduced a unique wine, Auntie Whine, to honor the role of aunties in African-American culture. Juneteenth, observed on 19 June, commemorates the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas in 1865, signifying the end of slavery in the US. Now a federally recognized holiday, Juneteenth is cherished as a celebration of African-American heritage.

The newly launched rosé, Auntie Whine, is described as possessing hints of cocoa butter and a silky smooth mouthfeel reminiscent of a silk bonnet. The exact blend composition and winemaking techniques employed remain undisclosed thus far.

On the back label of Auntie Whine, a QR code is featured, guiding consumers to a special Spotify playlist. Some of the songs on this playlist include Dutty Whine by Tony Matterhorn, Wine for Me by Popcaan, and Wine Slow by Gyptian.

Penelope Vasquez, a creative at Mother New York, highlighted the essential role of aunties in Black families and communities. Whether biological aunts or exuding ‘auntie vibes,’ they bring joy, personality, and warmth to social gatherings, particularly common during the summer season.

Contrary to the initial interpretation of the word ‘whine’ in the name Auntie Whine, which might suggest complaining, Vasquez clarified its significance. In this context, ‘whining’ refers to a type of dance characterized by waist and hip movements, common in Caribbean Black culture and various other dance forms.

It could be argued that targeting an alcoholic product at a specific demographic may perpetuate stereotypes of excessive drinking among that group. However, Vasquez emphasized that Auntie Whine aims to celebrate a joyful and confident atmosphere where women can unwind to great music, showcasing their moves and enjoying a refreshing beverage.
