“Baby Reindeer” star Jessica Gunning has commended Richard Gadd‘s courage in the creation and production of the Emmy-nominated Netflix series. This dark comedy thriller is among several British shows aiming for success at the esteemed 76th Emmy Awards, having garnered a total of 11 nominations.

Scottish comedian Richard Gadd is nominated for three awards for acting, writing, and producing. Meanwhile, Jessica Gunning, who portrays stalker Martha Scott, has been recognized with a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series.

The series, which depicts Gadd’s character Donny Dunn being pursued by Gunning’s character, became controversial when a woman claimed to be the inspiration behind Martha and sued Netflix, alleging inaccuracies in the portrayal.

“Unfortunately, as it is a legal case, I can’t really comment, but I want to celebrate the show, Richard’s bravery, the incredible writing, and his story,” Gunning expressed on the red carpet at the Emmys. “It’s amazing to see the global reach. Richard and I never anticipated such worldwide attention.”

The show has reportedly touched numerous viewers by its conclusion, with audiences finding it moving and an exhibition of Richard’s bravery in embodying his character.

“It has been intense since the show’s premiere in April,” Gunning shared. At the Emmy Awards, the series triumphed, securing four awards. Gadd received accolades for Writing and Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series, based on his real-life experiences of being stalked.

Jessica Gunning won the Outstanding Supporting Actress award and the show was honored in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category. These victories underline the support for “Baby Reindeer” despite criticisms from sources who claimed their portrayals were inaccurate.

Fiona Harvey alleged that she was the basis for Martha’s character, which she disputes, and is suing Netflix for several claims, including defamation. A hearing is scheduled for September 16, with a trial expected to start in May 2025.

Gadd, acknowledging the Awards on stage, credited his achievements to his parents’ advice to “follow your heart and the rest will fall into place.” His emotional acceptance speech emphasized perseverance through adversity and inspired those who endure difficult times.
