Bcgeu Celebrates International Women's Day With A Focus On Inclusivity And Equality

The BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) marks International Women's Day 2024 with a strong emphasis on recognizing and celebrating the unique perspectives and contributions of women, two-spirit, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals. The theme for this year highlights the importance of dismantling barriers and challenging stereotypes to achieve true gender equality.

In alignment with this theme, the union’s Women and Gender Rights Committee has been at the forefront of advocating for inclusivity and equality in the workplace. A recent conference hosted by the committee in Fort St. John delved into the intersection of gender rights and the labor movement, attracting nearly 100 members and activists.

During the conference, attendees engaged in discussions and workshops on various topics, including Domestic Violence at Work, Intersectionality from an Indigenous Lens, and Disability Rights and Justice at Work. This intersectional approach aimed to address the unique challenges faced by women and gender-diverse individuals from marginalized communities.

Additionally, the BCGEU has been actively supporting trans and gender-diverse rights. Members stood in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ union members and community groups to counter anti-trans hate events across the province. The union’s Women and Gender Rights Committee presented recommendations to the Provincial Executive, emphasizing the need for inclusive training and support for all members.

Despite the progress made, the union acknowledges that there is still work to be done. Upholding every individual’s rights and ensuring their voices are heard remains a priority. The core mission of ‘Inspire Inclusion’ underscores the ongoing efforts to challenge biases and promote gender equality in all spheres of society.

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, the BCGEU reaffirms its commitment to creating an empowered and inclusive environment for all. The union encourages members to engage in events and resources promoting gender equality and to take action towards achieving true parity.

In a statement, Stephanie Smith, the President of MoveUP, expressed solidarity and urged continued efforts towards gender equality and inclusivity. The union’s dedication to inspiring inclusion reflects its ongoing commitment to championing the rights of women and gender-diverse individuals.
