Beloved Actor Timothy West Passes Away at 90
Renowned British actor Timothy West has passed away at the age of 90. West, who died in his sleep on Tuesday, had a distinguished acting career spanning over 60 years. He was known for his versatile performances in a wide range of roles on stage and screen.
West was a familiar face in British soaps, having appeared in several episodes of Coronation Street in 2013 as Eric Babbage and in EastEnders from 2014 to 2015 as Stan Carter. He also starred in notable TV series such as the comedy drama Brass, where he played the ruthless self-made businessman Bradley Hardacre, and the sitcom Not Going Out, where he portrayed Geoffrey, the father of Lucy Adams.
In addition to his television work, West had a significant presence on stage, particularly in Shakespearean roles. He played King Lear in 2002 and again in 2016. His career also included portrayals of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in several productions, including From Churchill and the Generals (1979), The Last Bastion (1984), and Hiroshima (1995).
West was married to actress Prunella Scales for 61 years. Scales, best known for her role as Sybil in the comedy series Fawlty Towers, appeared alongside West in the documentary series Great Canal Journeys starting from 2014. The couple’s enduring marriage and collaborative work have been widely praised.
The family has expressed gratitude to the NHS staff at St George's Hospital, Tooting, and at Avery Wandsworth for their care during West’s final days.
