Beyoncé Lady Gaga Presidential Inauguration Performances

WASHINGTON — From Beyoncé to Lady Gaga, some of the nation’s most iconic voices have performed the national anthem at presidential inaugurations, marking historic moments with their renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” These performances have become a cherished tradition, blending music and politics in a celebration of democracy.

Beyoncé famously sang the national anthem at President Barack Obama‘s second inauguration on Jan. 21, 2013, at the U.S. Capitol. Her performance, though later revealed to be lip-synced to a pre-recorded track, captivated millions. “It was a live television event, and I wanted to ensure the performance was perfect,” Beyoncé explained afterward.

Lady Gaga delivered a powerful rendition at President Joe Biden‘s inauguration on Jan. 20, 2021, standing on the Capitol steps in a striking red and blue outfit. Her performance was praised for its emotional depth and technical precision, setting the tone for the historic day.

Other notable performances include Aretha Franklin‘s soulful rendition at Obama’s first inauguration in 2009 and Jackie Evancho‘s performance at President Donald Trump‘s inauguration in 2017. Evancho, then 16, became one of the youngest singers to perform at such an event.

Historically, Marian Anderson, a trailblazing contralto, sang at President John F. Kennedy‘s inauguration in 1961, breaking racial barriers in the process. Anderson’s performance was a milestone for African American artists in the classical music world.

Opera singers have also played a significant role. Marilyn Horne performed at President Bill Clinton‘s first inauguration in 1993, while Jessye Norman, a celebrated soprano, sang at Clinton’s second inauguration in 1997. Norman’s performance was particularly memorable for its grandeur and artistry.

Military musicians have also been a staple of inauguration ceremonies. Staff Sgt. Alvy Powell of the U.S. Army Band performed at President George H.W. Bush‘s inauguration in 1989, showcasing the talent within the armed forces.

These performances not only highlight the artists’ vocal prowess but also underscore the unifying power of music during pivotal moments in American history. As the nation looks forward to future inaugurations, the tradition of musical performances remains a testament to the enduring spirit of democracy.
