Big Lots Store Closing Sale Sign

CLARKSVILLE, TN – Big Lots in Clarksville will soon reopen under new ownership following weeks of liquidation sales. Variety Wholesalers announced Thursday they had purchased the local store as part of a nationwide acquisition of 220 Big Lots locations.

The surprise announcement came late Thursday afternoon, catching many by surprise as Big Lots was in the midst of a going-out-of-business sale. Jeff King, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Variety Wholesalers, confirmed the acquisition to Clarksville Now, stating, ‘We got the keys on Monday. We are going to race, and we’re going to soft open that store on the 10th of April, so it’s a pretty quick turnaround.’

Variety Wholesalers, a company known for its discount retail operations, will now serve as a tenant in the existing building. As part of the transition, they plan to modify the store’s inventory to include family apparel and closeout-driven merchandise, promising a slightly larger and improved shopping experience. ‘We’re excited to stay in Clarksville,’ King added.

The Clarksville-Montgomery County Economic Development Council had previously expressed concern about the number of retailers exiting the area and has been actively seeking potential replacements, particularly a grocery store. Josh Ward, Vice President for the Industrial Development Board, noted that following the recent news, the building owner remains open to accommodating future tenants.

This development comes amid a series of challenges, including a failed rezoning request for a proposed five-story apartment complex next door. City officials continue to stress the urgency of attracting a grocery store to Riverside Drive, emphasizing its importance for the local community.

As for the acquisition, King confirmed that the company has not only purchased the leases but also the intellectual property of Big Lots, reassuring customers that the stores will continue to operate under the familiar brand.

‘We are going to be reopening those stores; they are going to be Big Lots, they’re going to be a little bit bigger, a little bit better,’ King stated. Customers can expect new merchandise focused on affordability and value.
