Luxury Hydrogen Powered Superyacht Breakthrough

SEATTLE, Wash. — Bill Gates is reportedly preparing to sell his luxurious, hydrogen-powered superyacht, named “Breakthrough,” to Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi, CEO of Green For Life Environmental. The vessel, measuring 390 feet, was built by Dutch shipbuilder Feadship and launched in May 2024 as the world’s first superyacht powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

Gates, 69, has never actually set foot on Breakthrough, which features lavish amenities designed for opulent living. The yacht boasts two spacious bedrooms, an infinity pool, a helipad, and a wellness spa, among other luxurious features. Notably, this eco-friendly vessel runs exclusively on green energy, emitting only water vapor.

While it has been widely reported that Gates commissioned the superyacht, neither he nor Feadship has officially confirmed this. Despite its groundbreaking technology and upscale design, Gates appears ready to part ways with the vessel, which has an estimated value of $645 million.

Dovigi, known for his successful waste management company valued at approximately $18.62 billion, has expressed interest in acquiring the yacht, according to various reports. Previously, he owned the 377-foot superyacht AHPO, which he purchased for $362 million in 2023.

Jamie Edmiston, the CEO of Edmiston, a prominent yacht brokerage firm, praised Breakthrough, calling it “the most extraordinary yacht ever built” and a “game changer” in the superyacht industry.

Equipped with numerous outdoor lounges, a striking spiral staircase, and a spacious observation room, Breakthrough is capable of reaching speeds up to 17 knots (approximately 19.5 mph) and has the ability to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

Gates’ potential sale of Breakthrough would represent another significant business transaction for the Microsoft co-founder, who has an estimated net worth of $101.2 billion. His decision to sell comes amidst his efforts to manage wealth distribution for his children, whom he raises with ex-wife Melinda French Gates.

“My kids got a great upbringing and education, but less than 1% of the total wealth because I decided it wouldn’t be a favor to them,” Gates has stated.
