Billson’s Brewery Enters Voluntary Administration Amid Challenges
Billson’s Brewery, a historic name in the beverage scene, has announced that it is entering voluntary administration. The owners, Nathan and Felicity Cowan, issued a statement explaining that they faced a number of significant challenges over the years.
In their message, the Cowans reflected on the growth they experienced as a company but admitted that it came with a price. They cited ‘several mistakes’ that had put pressure on their systems and processes. They have spent months trying to restructure but ultimately concluded that going into administration was necessary for the brewery’s survival.
Billson’s, which is well-known for its pre-mixed spirits, liqueurs, and cordials, continues to be stocked in major retail chains like Coles and Woolworths. The brewery also operates as a popular tourist spot, featuring tours, a beer garden, and more.
The Cowans expressed their regret over the situation, noting how they feel devastated by the decision and the impact it will have on their employees. This is particularly concerning for the Beechworth community, where Billson’s is a major employer.
Indigo Shire Mayor Sophie Price shared her hope that the company could come through the administration process. She mentioned the importance of the brewery to local jobs and the community’s identity.
Others in the local brewing scene, like Barry Young from Wodonga, pointed out the larger issues affecting smaller breweries, such as rising energy costs and excise taxes. Competition with larger brands is also intensifying, making the road tougher for smaller brewers.
As Billson’s Brewery moves into this administration phase, they plan to keep the venue open while maintaining their distribution to bottle shops and pubs across the nation.
