Billy Joel Concert Announcement

NEW YORK, NY — Music legend Billy Joel has canceled his upcoming concerts after being diagnosed with a brain condition called normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The announcement came in a statement posted on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Joel, 76, expressed regret over disappointing his fans, saying, “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.” The condition has caused him to experience problems with hearing, vision, and balance, making it challenging for him to perform.

According to Joel’s team, doctors advised him to undergo physical therapy and refrain from performing during this recovery period. His diagnosis follows reports that recent performances exacerbated his symptoms.

NPH is characterized by a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, which can disrupt various neurological functions. Symptoms may include difficulties with walking, thinking, and bladder control. Dr. Jon LaPook, CBS News’ chief medical correspondent, noted that this condition is more common in older adults, although it remains underdiagnosed.

Joel’s canceled tour dates include multiple stadium shows across the United States, Canada, and the UK, previously scheduled through July 2026. Ticket holders will automatically receive refunds.

Despite this setback, Joel remains optimistic about returning to the stage. He thanked his fans for their support and emphasized his commitment to prioritizing his health. “I look forward to the day when I can once again take the stage,” he stated.

The treatment for NPH often involves the placement of a shunt to drain excess fluid from the brain, a procedure that can improve symptoms significantly. However, the condition is often confused with typical age-related issues, making early diagnosis critical.
