Blumhouse Announces Film Adaptation of Viral Game ‘Phasmophobia’

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Blumhouse is developing a film adaptation of the popular paranormal video game “Phasmophobia,” the studio announced Tuesday. The movie will be produced in association with Kinetic Games Limited and Atomic Monster. No release date or distributor has been announced yet.
Originally launched in early access in 2020, “Phasmophobia” quickly gained traction as a multiplayer ghost-hunting game. It became a hit among Twitch streamers and YouTubers, securing its place as the best-selling game on Steam for several weeks. The game has sold over 23 million copies globally and has been adapted for multiple consoles.
Daniel Knight, director of Kinetic Games, expressed excitement about the film adaptation. “We never could’ve imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago,” Knight said. “Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game.”
The announcement was made during Blumhouse’s first-ever “Business of Fear” event, which featured executives from the studio, including CEO Jason Blum and President Abhijay Prakash. They highlighted the growing trend of adapting video games into films and referenced Blumhouse’s recent success with “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which grossed $291 million worldwide.
As Blumhouse and Atomic Monster continue to explore new projects in horror, fans are eager to see how the cinematic version of “Phasmophobia” will transform the interactive fright fest into a compelling narrative.
