Bong Joon Ho Animated Film Sea Creatures

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Director Bong Joon-ho has provided an exciting update on his upcoming animated film, revealing that it is currently in development and may be released in 2027. This announcement comes just weeks before the premiere of his latest project, “Mickey 17,” scheduled to hit theaters on March 7, 2024.

During an interview with Collider, Joon-ho described the new project as a unique CGI-animated film focused on deep sea creatures, featuring adorable creature protagonists along with human characters. He stated, “I have been working on this animation film since 2019, and now we have more than 100 artists working on the film, and the pipeline is fully going. It’s really going. It’s under works now. 2027, maybe.” This marks a significant commitment and scale for the project, indicating Joon-ho’s ambition to bring the underwater world to life.

The director acknowledged that the production of “Mickey 17” has likely taken up most of his time since its announcement in 2021, resulting in limited updates on the animated film. However, with over 100 people dedicated to the animated feature, fans can anticipate a visually stunning experience that reflects Joon-ho’s signature storytelling style.

As details about the cast and storyline remain tightly under wraps, the expectations are high for both films. Critics have yet to provide a Rotten Tomatoes score for “Mickey 17,” but early reviews suggest it could follow in the footsteps of Joon-ho’s previous successes. “Mickey 17” stars a prominent lead actor, with Oscar nominees such as Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Ackie, and Steven Yeun rounding out the cast.

Before achieving critical acclaim with “Parasite,” the first foreign language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars in 2020, Joon-ho gained attention for his work on “Okja,” a collaboration with Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal. Additionally, his acclaimed dystopian thriller “Snowpiercer,” which debuted in 2013, not only captivated audiences but also inspired a spin-off series that concluded after four successful seasons last year.

As anticipation builds for both the release of “Mickey 17” and the unveiling of his animated feature, fans are encouraged to stay tuned to Collider for future updates. Tickets for “Mickey 17” are available now, promising to deliver an exceptional cinematic experience.
