LOS ANGELES, CA — This weekend, the box office is set for an exciting showdown as three new movies open in North America. Leading the pack, the R-rated vampire thriller ‘Sinners,’ directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, is expected to earn between $25 million and $30 million in its second weekend, following a robust opening weekend of $48 million.

‘Sinners’ has already grossed $55 million domestically and $71 million internationally against a $90 million production budget. It marks the biggest debut for an original film since 2019, making its performance a significant success.

In terms of new releases, Ben Affleck’s ‘The Accountant 2‘ is aiming for $20 million to $25 million from 3,610 theaters. This film is a sequel to the 2016 hit ‘The Accountant,’ which surprised everyone by ending its run with $155 million globally after a $24.7 million opening. The second installment carries a larger budget of $80 million and is directed by Gavin O’Connor.

‘The Accountant 2’ follows forensic accountant Christian Wolff, played by Affleck, as he teams up with his estranged brother to confront mysterious assassins while uncovering a conspiracy. Critics have praised the sequel for advancing the original story and delivering an enjoyable cinematic experience.

Meanwhile, Disney is re-releasing ‘Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith‘ for its 20th anniversary. Based on advance ticket sales, it is projected to pull in between $20 million and $22 million this weekend.

Another newcomer, Sony’s R-rated horror film ‘Groundhog Day‘ is targeting $8 million to $10 million from 3,000 venues. Inspired by the video game of the same name, this film depicts a group of friends trapped in a time loop, stalked by a masked killer that echoes the plot of a timeless classic.

A24 is also debuting ‘Ochi,’ a fantastical film with expectations to bring in lower numbers from 1,150 venues. Directed by Isaiah Saxon, it tells the story of a shy farm girl who befriends a wounded baby ochi—an elusive creature she was raised to fear. Early reviews highlight the film’s striking visuals, praising the creativity behind its execution.

As the box office struggles to recover from a lackluster start to 2025, revenues are up 5% compared to last year, but still 29% behind the pre-COVID levels of 2019, according to Comscore. Upcoming films like Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ and Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ are expected to help maintain audience interest in theaters in the coming weeks.
