SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have locked in quarterback Brock Purdy with a five-year, $265 million contract extension, solidifying his role as the team’s leader for years to come.

The deal, finalized on Friday, includes $181 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This contract elevates Purdy from a minimum salary player to one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

Purdy, originally drafted as the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, was previously under contract for a mere $2.6 million over his first three seasons. His new average salary of $53 million per year surpasses his entire rookie deal earnings.

General Manager John Lynch expressed optimism about finalizing the deal at the recent NFL league meeting in Florida, stating, “I think we’re going to get the deal done.” As offseason workouts began in April, Purdy’s presence indicated both parties were moving towards an agreement.

In 2024, Purdy struggled during a challenging season but still showed impressive stats, finishing seventh in QBR and leading in passing yards with 3,864 in 15 games. His performance was hindered by injuries to key teammates like running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan and Lynch reaffirmed their faith in Purdy, emphasizing his leadership and potential to win a Super Bowl for the franchise. “Brock is the leader of our team,” Shanahan stated in January. “He’s a guy I’ve got a lot of confidence in… capable of winning a Super Bowl with him.”

With the contract secured, Purdy is focused on helping the 49ers rebound from a disappointing season. He aims to prove he can lead the team back to contention and further solidify his legacy with the organization.

The 49ers also made moves to strengthen their special teams, reaching a one-year deal with veteran kicker Greg Joseph, indicating ongoing efforts to enhance the roster around Purdy.
