NEW YORK, NY — Matthew Broderick and his son, James Broderick, are set to appear together in the upcoming episode of the CBS series ‘Elsbeth,’ airing on February 20 at 10 p.m. Eastern Time. The episode, titled ‘Foiled Again,’ will delve into the investigation surrounding the mysterious death of a college admissions officer.

In this intriguing episode, Elsbeth, portrayed by Katie Preston, encounters Lawrence Grey, played by Matthew Broderick, who is an independent educational consultant making promises of Ivy League admissions for his clients’ children. The narrative poses questions about how well Elsbeth has prepared her own son, Teddy, for life outside of their sheltered experiences.

The official synopsis reveals that Lawrence’s character has a history with a former student, Ethan, who he claims he helped transform through fencing, a skill that profoundly changed his life.

In a sneak peek shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Lawrence discusses Ethan’s past with Elsbeth, stating, “He was just a scrawny little kid in his high school drama club, always puffing on his inhaler. I helped him find fencing which changed his life.”

The investigation leads Elsbeth to question Lawrence about his young employees, to which he quips, “Oh, no, we usually start younger,” prompting her to reflect on her own parenting choices.

Matthew Broderick expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “I was so proud and happy to work with my son James. Working with everyone on Elsbeth was a pleasure and I’m excited for the episode to come out.”

James, who plays a ‘success trainer’ at Lawrence’s educational consulting firm, echoed his father’s sentiments. “What a thrill it was to work side by side with my dad — who also happens to be my favorite actor! The whole experience of working on Elsbeth was beyond exciting and I am very grateful to the producers for giving me this opportunity!”

This episode is not only a family affair but will also see the return of Judge Crawford, played by Amy Blake, adding to the familial connections present in ‘Foiled Again.’

As stories unfold in the episode, Lawrence challenges Elsbeth about her son Teddy’s career choices in the nonprofit sector and questions if she adequately prepared him for the pressures of competitive academia.

In response, Elsbeth defends Teddy: “Gosh, seeing all this makes me wonder if I did right by Teddy. As long as he’s happy,” she reflects, clearly proud of her son’s choices.

The episode promises to intertwine personal stories with a deeper message about parenting and the expectations placed on children regarding education and success.

Fans can catch ‘Elsbeth’ Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
