Bucks Struggle as Playoff Race Intensifies in Eastern Conference

MIAMI – The Milwaukee Bucks suffered a setback in their playoff chase, losing to the Atlanta Hawks 145-124 on Sunday, further complicating their positioning as the regular season approaches its end.
The defeat marked the Bucks’ fourth consecutive loss and pushed their record to 40-34, while the Hawks improved to 36-38. Head coach Doc Rivers expressed frustration after his team’s performance, which allowed Atlanta to score 26 points off turnovers and gain another 17 points from offensive rebounds.
“It’s deflating and disappointing,” Rivers said. “We didn’t listen well to what we needed to do defensively.” Milwaukee’s defensive issues have become increasingly evident, giving up the most points in a half they’ve allowed all season with a staggering 82 points in the first half against Atlanta.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, the team’s star player, played through a left foot sprain but managed to record 31 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Following the game, he reflected on the challenges of leading a team with numerous injuries and painting a picture of camaraderie amidst a tough stretch.
“Just try to be vocal, control what you can control, and build confidence in my teammates,” Antetokounmpo said. “That’s all you can do, then just play basketball.”
Despite significant contributions from players like Kyle Kuzma, who scored 25 points, and Gary Trent Jr., who added 10 points, the Bucks struggled to close the gap after falling behind early. They faced an 18-point deficit just minutes into the second half, prompting Rivers to call for urgent adjustments.
Rivers acknowledged the need to rethink his team’s strategy, specifically in recruiting players off the bench, as they faced injuries to key players. He noted that their lack of depth was a crucial element of their struggles.
“Any game we score 120, we should win with our defense. Obviously, I was wrong,” Rivers said bluntly.
As the regular season moves forward, Detroit’s victory over Minnesota dropped the Pistons to 42-34, just ahead of Milwaukee in the playoff race. The Bucks remain in a tie with Detroit but hold the tiebreaker advantage after winning their previous matchups this season.
The Bucks are scheduled to face the Pistons in the final two games of the regular season on April 11 and 13. Those matchups could be critical in determining playoff positioning as the Bucks look to avoid slipping into a less favorable seed.
The upcoming clash against Miami exemplifies the increasing stakes, as both teams vie for their spots in the Eastern Conference playoff bracket. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT, and Bucks fans hope their team can bounce back to solidify its playoff position before the postseason begins.
