Byron Donalds Kicks Off Gubernatorial Campaign Backed by Trump

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds officially launched his campaign for Florida governor Friday evening, backed by former President Donald Trump, during a rally in his hometown of Bonita Springs. The event was held at Sugarshack, a popular live music venue and restaurant, attracting enthusiastic supporters while positioning Donalds to replace Governor Ron DeSantis, whose term is set to expire.
During his speech, Donalds shared his priorities with the crowd, emphasizing his commitment to addressing Florida’s pressing issues such as the insurance crisis, infrastructure improvements, environmental restoration, and educational standards. “This is the free state of Florida, and as your next governor, it will remain the free state of Florida,” he declared.
Accompanied by his wife, Erika Donalds, who introduced him to the crowd, Byron exited the stage amid cheers and “Team Donalds” signs, marking a significant step in his political journey. He reflected on his arrival in Florida as a teenager, traveling with little more than a bag of clothes on a Greyhound bus.
In his closing remarks, Donalds urged his supporters, “Together, we will get this done. Together, Florida will continue to be the best state in America and show the other 49 how to get the job done.” Following his speech, he was joined on stage by his family, creating a personal and relatable atmosphere.
Donald’s entry into the race comes amid speculation regarding potential rivals, particularly with DeSantis hinting at his wife, Casey DeSantis, as a possible contender for the gubernatorial seat. However, as of now, Donalds, 46, faces limited competition within the Republican primary.
The political climate is charged, especially after DeSantis and his wife recently visited South Florida for meetings with Trump, including a golf outing at Trump International Golf Course earlier this month. Political analysts suggest that Donalds’ next move should focus on securing endorsements from state legislators and congressional allies, as many are closely connected to DeSantis.
Given Trump’s backing, Donalds will likely experience fewer challenges in fundraising as he navigates the primary landscape. Trump’s previous endorsements have proven influential in bolstering candidates’ chances in both gubernatorial and congressional races, signifying a strategic advantage for Donalds.
While Donalds may not yet enjoy widespread name recognition across Florida, his staunch support for Trump and active participation in the conservative Tea Party Caucus positions him as a notable contender. After being elected to the U.S. House in 2020, he garnered respect from his Republican peers and was considered a viable option for Trump’s vice presidential running mate in the previous election cycle.
This campaign debut marks the beginning of what is expected to be a heated gubernatorial race in Florida as Donalds sets his sights on the governor’s mansion.
