Calgary Stampeders Eye Playoff Return with New QB Vernon Adams Jr.

CALGARY, Alberta — The Calgary Stampeders are eager to regain their playoff status as the 2025 CFL season kicks off. After missing the postseason for the first time in 19 years, the Stampeders aim to prove their worth to fans and critics alike.
Starting positions are up for grabs throughout the team, from the defensive backfield to the return game. Head coach Dave Dickenson, in his third season managing both coaching and general roles, noted that the team has a mix of new talent and size that could reignite their performance.
“We’ve got to find playmakers,” Dickenson said. “It feels like the guys believe we have the pieces in place. Winning games is the goal, and if we can do that on our new turf, we’ll be a happy group.”
The Stampeders open their season at home on Saturday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, featuring quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, a two-time Grey Cup and two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player. The team also welcomes newly acquired quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., who comes from the B.C. Lions.
“He understands that all eyes are on him,” said Stampeders receiver Reggie Begelton. “But we win or lose as a team. We have his back no matter what.”
Adams led the CFL in passing yards in 2023 and ranked second in touchdowns. His performance dropped in 2024 due to an injury, but he brings a winning mindset to Calgary. “He’s going to bring Calgary back to where it used to be,” receiver Dominique Rhymes predicted.
With last season’s record at 5-12-1, the Stampeders faced challenges, including a struggling defense that was the worst at stopping the rush. Addressing these issues, Dickenson emphasized reducing turnovers and improving execution in all areas.
The team has undergone significant changes, including the addition of seven new position coaches. Craig Dickenson has taken over special teams, replacing Mark Kilam, who is now head coach of Edmonton. This shake-up is a response to a disappointing last-place finish.
“We have to put the past behind us and focus on this new team,” Dickenson said. “Every practice and meeting has to count.”
Begelton, who recently extended his contract, sees promise in the current squad. “Energy and vibes are important; you can’t deny them when you feel them,” he said.
The road to recovery begins with the first game against Hamilton, marking a fresh start for the Stampeders and their pursuit of playoff football.
