California Boy Declines Pirates’ Offer, Auctions Rare Baseball Card for Wildfire Relief
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — An 11-year-old California boy has turned down an offer from the Pittsburgh Pirates for his one-of-a-kind rookie card of pitcher Paul Skenes, choosing instead to auction the card to raise funds for victims of the recent Los Angeles wildfires.
The boy, whose name has not been disclosed, received the rare card as part of a Topps trading card pack. The Pirates reportedly offered a significant sum for the card, which features Skenes, the team’s top draft pick in 2023. However, the young collector decided to use the card’s value to support a greater cause.
“I thought about keeping it or taking the offer, but when I saw how much the wildfires hurt people, I knew I had to help,” the boy said in a statement. “This card can do more good for others than it can for me.”
The card is set to be auctioned through a major sports memorabilia platform, with all proceeds going to wildfire relief efforts in Los Angeles County. The wildfires, which began earlier this month, have destroyed hundreds of homes and displaced thousands of residents.
Paul Skenes, the subject of the card, expressed his admiration for the boy’s decision. “It’s incredible to see someone so young make such a selfless choice,” Skenes said. “I’m honored to be part of something that will help so many people.”
Experts estimate the card could fetch upwards of $100,000 at auction, given its rarity and Skenes’ rising star status in Major League Baseball. The auction is expected to draw significant attention from collectors and sports fans alike.
Local officials praised the boy’s initiative. “This act of generosity is a beacon of hope during a difficult time,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. “It reminds us all of the power of community and compassion.”
The auction is scheduled to begin next week, with bidding open to the public. The boy and his family have requested privacy but expressed their gratitude for the support they’ve received.
