Cameron Reveals Major Callback in Avatar: Fire and Ash
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — James Cameron announced that his upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will feature a significant callback to the first movie in the franchise. In a recent interview, Cameron discussed his creative process leading up to the film’s release on December 19, 2025.
During the interview, Cameron admitted that while he typically does not second-guess his creative impulses, he made an exception while developing Avatar 3. He felt the storytelling was ‘a little off.’ He elaborated on the pivotal role of Toruk, the great bird ridden by Jake in the original Avatar. Cameron explained, ‘I’ve always been waiting for the question, ‘Why doesn’t he just go get the big red bird and kill everybody like he used to do?’ Because that doesn’t exist in The Way of Water at all.’
Initially, Toruk was not part of the storyline for Fire and Ash. However, Cameron decided to incorporate it back into the plot after realizing it was essential. ‘I went, ‘Oh, he’s got to go get the bird.’ Come on! I was saving it for a later film. I was like, “F*** that! He should get the bird. Get the Toruk,”’ he shared.
This change required Cameron to reshoot several scenes, which he stated worked beautifully, sparking excitement among the cast. ‘It’s like, Oh, okay, that feels right, you know?’ he said.
Avatar: Fire and Ash follows the monumental success of its predecessors, which are the highest-grossing movies of all time, with the first two films generating a combined total of over $6 billion worldwide. To continue this trend, Fire and Ash will need to gross at least $2 billion globally upon its release.
As the anticipation builds for the film’s debut, fans are eager to see how the nostalgic callbacks resonate with audiences. Cameron’s commitment to intertwining elements from the original film demonstrates his dedication to the Avatar saga.
