Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet Dress Code

CANNES, France — As the Cannes Film Festival approaches, organizers have announced a new dress code that prohibits nudity for attendees, set to begin May 13, 2025. This rule aims to maintain decorum during the glamour-filled event, which runs until May 24.

The festival’s updated guidelines state, ‘Nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival,’ a decision made ‘for decency reasons.’ This prohibition directly impacts the popular trend of ‘naked dresses,’ which have taken the fashion world by storm in recent years.

Attendees have historically made headlines with daring gowns that suggest nudity, but those opting for such styles will have to rethink their choices. Model Bella Hadid‘s sheer Saint Laurent dress from last year is just one example of the sheer outfits seen on the red carpet. This year, the festival is aiming to strike a balance between high fashion and the event’s esteemed reputation.

Not only will nudity be banned, but organizers will not allow ‘voluminous outfits,’ particularly those with large trains that interfere with seating or the flow of movement at the festival’s events. Attendees must adhere to more traditional evening wear, including tuxedos for men and long dresses for women, as well as options like little black dresses or cocktail dresses.

Specific requirements also state that guests must wear ‘elegant shoes’ or sandals. Sneakers and other casual footwear are not permitted. This rigorous dress code comes in response to past controversies, including a 2015 incident where women were criticized for not wearing high heels.

The updated dress code has sparked discussions about the future of red carpet fashion. The festival’s ban on nude attire raises questions about how attendees will navigate the fine line between celebration of fashion and adherence to the new rules. As the event nears, all eyes will be on the red carpet to see if A-list celebrities challenge the restrictions creatively.
