CBS Evening News Debuts New Co-Anchors in Historic Studio 47

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. — The “CBS Evening News” is entering a new era as co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois take the helm, marking the first time the iconic broadcast will feature dual anchors. The revamped show, set to debut Monday, will broadcast from the historic Studio 47 in New York City, introducing a fresh look and format to the 60-year-old program.
Dickerson, son of CBS News’ first female correspondent, and DuBois, son of Caribbean immigrants, will succeed Norah O’Donnell, who recently stepped down. The duo aims to bring a new dynamic to the flagship newscast, which has been anchored by legends like Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, and Bob Schieffer.
In an interview with WTOP, the co-anchors shared their vision for the show. “John and I, we had dinner, two to three minutes into the conversation, I knew I liked this guy,” DuBois said. “That was like two or three months ago.” Dickerson joked about their quick rapport, suggesting they might have benefited from a more intense bonding experience, like a four-day backpacking trip.
Both anchors emphasized their shared perspective and commitment to delivering meaningful journalism. “Even though we come from two different places, we tend to see things really in a similar way,” Dickerson said. A sign in his office reading “WHY?” serves as a guiding principle for their approach. “That’s the central question at the heart of what we do. Why are we telling you this story? Why does it matter to you?” he explained.
DuBois highlighted the importance of context in today’s complex world. “Our aim is to put all that stuff into context, to let you know at home that, hey, this is what it really means, and it’s going to be all right at the end of the day,” he said.
The new format will leverage the anchors’ curiosity and exchanges with correspondents to provide deeper insights into global events. Both fathers of two sons, Dickerson and DuBois also bring a sense of humor to their partnership. “If you are a dad and you don’t have a sense of humor, you’re in a world of trouble,” DuBois quipped.
The “CBS Evening News” has long been a cornerstone of American journalism, and this latest chapter aims to uphold its legacy while adapting to the evolving media landscape. Viewers can expect a blend of rigorous reporting and engaging storytelling when the new show premieres Monday.
