Suleika Jaouad Book Club Gathering

New York, NY – Last week, a gathering featuring writer Suleika Jaouad took place in a cozy New York living room, celebrating her journey and new book. At just 22, Jaouad was diagnosed with leukemia and initially faced a daunting 35% chance of survival. After years in treatment, she emerged cancer-free but had to learn how to live again.

Jaouad’s latest work is a journaling guide enriched with prompts and essays from notable writers, including her husband Jon Batiste and authors like Ann Patchett and George Saunders. During the event, Suleika described journaling as a lifeline, stating, ‘Journaling saved my life during difficult times.’ The attendees participated in writing exercises, exploring topics like their hands, leading to unexpected insights on identity and culture.

Attendee Clare de Boer recounted the fun everyone had with a lighthearted exercise where guests closed their eyes to draw a giraffe, resulting in laughter over their sketches. Another activity encouraged guests to share something they would put on their ‘unofficial resume,’ revealing hidden talents and personal anecdotes.

Priya Parker, a guest, shared her skills as a matchmaker for readers, while Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen proudly recalled her past in synchronized swimming. Guest Hrishikesh Hirway showcased his passion for chocolate chip cookies, sharing his favorite spots around the country.

The gathering fostered connection, encouraging attendees to brainstorm future collaborations and friendships. The atmosphere buzzed with creativity and community, with many leaving inspired to create their own journaling groups. Attendee Joanna Goddard expressed the possibility of forming a journaling club, citing it an engaging way to connect and share experiences.

In closing, the event highlighted the transformative power of writing and community in healing and personal growth, encouraging all to explore the depths of their creativity.
