Celebration of Life for Onyeka Onwenu as Music Icon Laid to Rest in Lagos
On August 30, 2024, renowned Nigerian music icon Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion,’ was laid to rest at the Ebony Vaults in Ikoyi, Lagos. This ceremony marked the end of a remarkable life, as Onyeka Onwenu passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, following a tragic incident at an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
The funeral service occurred at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, where family, friends, and admirers gathered to pay tribute to the multifaceted artist. A private burial followed the service, providing a moment for those close to her to grieve in a more intimate setting.
Notable attendees included former presidential candidate Peter Obi and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, both of whom paid their respects to the late music icon. Onyeka Onwenu’s contributions to music and the arts were celebrated, highlighting her extensive career as a singer, broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist.
Throughout her life, Onyeka Onwenu endeared herself to many with her powerful voice and impactful performances. She is survived by her two sons, who, along with family and friends, mourn her loss while cherishing the legacy she leaves behind.
