JJ Chalmers recently opened up about his strong friendship with Prince Harry, which began back in 2014. At that time, JJ was getting ready to compete in a triathlon after a life-changing incident while serving in the Armed Forces.

In 2011, while on duty in the Royal Marines, he and his team were caught in a devastating explosion when they accidentally triggered an improvised explosive device (IED). JJ woke up in a military hospital in Birmingham after being in a coma for a week, completely overwhelmed by injuries.

Describing the horrific aftermath of the explosion, JJ said, “Every part of my body had sustained some sort of damage.” He faced immense physical challenges, and despite going through 30 surgeries, he expressed gratitude for the incredible work of the surgeons who helped reconstruct his body.

Reflecting on his injuries, JJ shared the painful details: “My legs were torn open, my face was crushed, my neck was broken.” He emphasized that, aside from a few fingers, he managed to keep everything else, thanks to the skilled surgeons.

This difficult chapter in JJ’s life led him to meet Prince Harry, who encouraged him to participate in the Invictus Games, a sporting event for wounded soldiers. Their bond continued to grow, and JJ, along with his wife Kornelia, were even invited to the royal wedding events in 2018.

Ahead of the wedding, JJ expressed his amazement at how far he had come, stating, “The idea that somehow my life has gone from that to this is so incredible.” He referred to Harry as his friend, highlighting the fun they have whenever they meet.

JJ has credited Prince Harry as a significant influence on his recovery journey, saying, “I wouldn’t be stood here talking to you if it wasn’t for him.” Appreciating Harry’s role, he noted that their friendship has played a crucial part in his healing process, something he will always be grateful for.
