Chaos Erupts as Madagascar President Ousted Amid Protests
Antananarivo, Madagascar — Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Madagascar on Tuesday, continuing to voice their anger against President Andry Rajoelina. This discontent comes after the president dismissed his entire government in an attempt to quell a wave of unrest that has turned deadly.
The protests began last week and have gained momentum, inspired by youth-led movements in Indonesia and Nepal. Demonstrators rallied in the capital, demanding Rajoelina’s resignation and proper governance.
During the march, participants waved flags featuring a skull symbol from the popular anime “One Piece,” which has become a representation of their cause. The protests turned violent when police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.
Activist Masova, speaking under a pseudonym for safety, expressed the fatigue of the Malagasy people towards misgovernance. “We really want change, the rule of law, justice for all,” she said, emphasizing that the movement is no longer just about younger generations.
In response to ongoing tensions, the national water and electricity union announced a general strike. Rajoelina’s recent actions, including the firing of his ministers, have not been sufficient to ease public discontent. “This was a small victory,” Masova remarked.
Previous demonstrations have resulted in violence, with reports indicating at least 22 fatalities and numerous injuries. The United Nations condemned the excessive use of force by security personnel, which has included live ammunition.
Rajoelina initially came to power in 2009 following a coup and faced resistance in the 2013 elections. He was re-elected in 2018 and again in 2023 amid accusations of a rigged process. As unrest continues, Rajoelina has invited candidates for a new cabinet, but skepticism remains regarding the effectiveness of his leadership.
The streets of Antananarivo remain tense as protesters vow to push for change. “The fight will never stop until the goal is reached,” concluded the Gen Z movement’s social media statement, calling for unity among the people.
