Chaos Erupts Mid-Flight in New Action Thriller ‘Fight or Flight’

BANGKOK, Thailand — The new action thriller ‘Fight or Flight,’ directed by James Madigan, is attracting attention for its high-octane sequences and chaotic premise. Premiering in select international markets, the film follows washed-up ex-Secret Service agent Lucas Reyes, played by Josh Hartnett, as he embarks on a dangerous mission onboard a hijacked flight.
Set against the backdrop of Bangkok, Reyes is called back into action by Katherine Brunt, portrayed by Katee Sackhoff, a former flame and agent of a clandestine agency. She informs Reyes that the mysterious terrorist known as ‘The Ghost‘ is also on the same flight bound for San Francisco, and he must uncover their identity. The challenge intensifies as Reyes realizes that the plane is packed with hired killers all vying for the same target.
“To uncover The Ghost, I have to navigate a fight for survival against formidable enemies,” says Reyes, illustrating the high stakes involved in his mission. The film employs a combination of humor and intense fight sequences, reminiscent of ensemble action films like ‘Bullet Train’ and the stylistic chaos of ‘The Raid.’
Madigan’s directorial debut takes a B-movie approach, favoring over-the-top action and gore while maintaining an energetic pace that keeps the audience engaged. Notably, each fight scene is choreographed by Brahim Chab, who has previously shown his skill in films like ‘Monkey Man.’ Chab’s signature style brings an exhilarating quality to the fight scenes, which have been described as frenzied and creatively chaotic.
Hartnett delivers a performance that combines both comedic timing and action hero prowess, with his character battling not only external threats but his own inner demons related to substance use. His portrayal of Reyes captures the character’s desperation and determination to escape his past while navigating challenges presented by both the terrorists and personal relationships.
“It’s great to see Josh dive into this role,” said Madigan. “What he brings to the chaotic action sequences is impressive.” His enthusiasm for the project enhances the film’s overall appeal, contributing to its status as a potential cult classic.
Supporting performances from actors including Katee Sackhoff and Charithra Chandran help flesh out the narrative, though some characters, like Sackhoff’s Brunt, are limited in screen time. Nonetheless, Chandran shines as a central figure in the plot, providing dynamic moments that lead to the film’s chaotic climax.
Despite its limitations in originality and a rather straightforward plot, ‘Fight or Flight’ manages to resonate with audiences by prioritizing entertainment and visceral action. As cinema fans eagerly await its U.S. release set tentatively for May, lovers of the genre have voiced their excitement for this roller-coaster ride.
“This film is pure fun,” said one viewer after an early screening. “It’s not about being groundbreaking but offering a wild adventure to enjoy.” The anticipation surrounding its release signals that ‘Fight or Flight’ could carve out a niche among contemporary action films.
Overall, the film has received scores of 4 out of 5 for its action and a 4/5 for acting, as early reviews appreciate the blend of humor, action-packed sequences, and the film’s unapologetic joyride through chaos.
