Chaos unfolded in south-west Sydney on Monday night as a prominent Orthodox Christian leader was allegedly stabbed during a mass at the Assyrian Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, New South Wales.

New South Wales premier Chris Minns urged for calm following the alleged attack which took place as Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was conducting the service, with shocking live stream footage capturing the disturbing incident.

During the mass, a person approached the altar and appeared to make multiple stabbing motions towards the bishop, causing chaos among the congregation. Three other individuals were also reportedly injured in the attack, leading to a heated confrontation between the police and the community.

Police swiftly arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene, who had to be held at the church for his own safety as a large crowd gathered outside, prompting the deployment of riot police.

NSW acting Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland described the tense situation, highlighting that the suspect sustained injuries to his hand during the incident.

The standoff escalated as members of the crowd became agitated, resulting in two police officers being injured while attempting to control the situation. The chaotic scene saw individuals breaking into houses to procure weapons to hurl at the police, adding to the volatile atmosphere.

Premier Chris Minns issued a statement calling for composure amidst the turmoil, expressing concern for the victims and the first responders tackling the escalating situation.

Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and another priest injured in the attack were transported to the hospital, with both reported to be in stable condition. The church appealed for peace and unity in the aftermath of the incident, emphasizing the need for prayers and a calm resolution.

As tensions mounted in western Sydney, Inamul Haq Kauser, national president and Grand Imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, vehemently denounced the attack and extended well wishes for the recovery of the injured parties.

The local community remained on edge following recent events, including the stabbing incident at Bondi Junction Westfield over the weekend, underscoring the need for vigilance and cooperation during turbulent times.
