Charlotte FC Prepares for Rivalry Showdown Against Atlanta United

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte FC will host their arch-rivals Atlanta United FC this Saturday, March 1, at Bank of America Stadium for their 2025 home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:25 p.m. ET, and the matchup has been designated as MLS Match of the Week.
The Crown, having secured a precious away point against Seattle Sounders last week, are eager to capture three points at their fortress, especially since Atlanta defeated them 1-0 in their last encounter. Charlotte FC’s head coach Dean Smith is demanding a stronger performance from his players.
“We’ve done a review on the game, the opposition ran 5,000 kilometers more than us. That’s a stat that I said to the team is damning on us,” Smith commented on his team’s effort last game. “We have to be better, but they know that and they can fix it because it was one of our strengths last season.”
In preparation for the game, fans are encouraged to arrive early. The parking lots will open at 10:30 a.m., and the pre-match party on Legends Row between the Blue Cross NC East Gate and North Gate runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Early attendees can receive a limited-edition CLTFC snapback hat, courtesy of Ally.
In addition to the hat giveaway, the pre-match event will feature various attractions including the Ally Racing Open Road Sweepstakes, where fans can enter for a chance to win a truck and VIP NASCAR experience. Attendees can also enjoy free samples of Bojangles’ new Bo Berry Chicken Waffle and participate in the Ally Savings Bucket Challenge for prizes.
Charlotte FC’s lineup will also see the much-anticipated debut of Ivorian forward Wilfried Zaha, who missed the season opener due to personal reasons. His presence adds to the offensive options for Charlotte, who are keen to perform well against Atlanta.
On the opposing side, Atlanta United will aim for momentum after their 3-2 victory over CF Montreal last week under new head coach Ronny Deila. The Five Stripes have enhanced their roster by acquiring midfielder Miguel Almiron, who made a notable comeback, and center-back Stian Gregersen noted the positive change in dynamics within the team.
“Obviously, it’s early in the season, but just the energy so far… The feeling is that guys are starting to get more used to playing alongside each other,” Gregersen said. “The biggest difference from last year is we have a more competitive team now, in our whole squad.”
As matchday approaches, the excitement builds among fans, particularly with the rivalry’s history. Charlotte has had the upper hand in recent meetings at Bank of America Stadium, boasting a solid home record. From June 2023, the Crown has only lost three out of their last 29 matches at home, a statistic they aim to maintain.
The match day will include various activities and food options, with snackbar offerings designed to please the crowd. From Southern-style dishes to signature cocktails, there will be no shortage of game-day favorites. Those attending might also notice the introduction of RFID technology at the Team Store to enhance shopping convenience.
As fans prepare for the showdown, it’s a pivotal game for both squads as they vie for supremacy in the Eastern Conference standings. What remains to be seen is whether Charlotte can turn the tables on Atlanta and claim the victory in their 2025 home opener.
