LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Tracy Spiridakos, known for her role as Detective Hailey Upton on NBC‘s Chicago P.D., shared heartbreaking news with fans on January 20, revealing the passing of her beloved dog, Nala. The 36-year-old actress announced the loss in an emotional Instagram post, accompanied by a photo carousel celebrating the Rottweiler’s life.

“Last week we had to say goodbye to our beloved Nala,” Spiridakos wrote. “We are gutted. I can’t even begin to tell you how special she was. She has been my companion for over 12 years, my best friend and the highlight of every day I was fortunate enough to spend with her.”

Nala, who had been a constant presence in Spiridakos’ life for over a decade, was often seen on set with the actress during her tenure on Chicago P.D. from Seasons 4 through 12. Spiridakos described Nala as irreplaceable, writing, “There will never be another Nala. I will forever be grateful to have been loved by her.”

The post included nostalgic photos of Nala, from her early days as a puppy to her later years as Spiridakos’ loyal companion. Fans and co-stars flooded the comments with condolences and shared memories of the beloved dog. Jesse Lee Soffer, Spiridakos’ former co-star, had recently posted a photo of Nala on his Instagram, calling her his “best buddy.”

Spiridakos’ decision to leave Chicago P.D. in Season 11 was influenced by her desire to explore new opportunities, as she revealed in a May 2024 interview with NBC Insider. “It was a really hard decision, and I don’t know that there’s ever a right time,” she said. “I was just wanting to switch it up and kind of see what else was out there.”

Nala’s passing marks the end of an era for Spiridakos, who has often spoken about the deep bond she shared with her dog. The actress’ heartfelt tribute resonated with fans, many of whom expressed their support during this difficult time.
