NEW YORK, March 26, 2025 — Chipotle Mexican Grill has quelled rumors circulating on social media regarding widespread store closures and potential bankruptcy, clarifying that the fast-casual chain plans to expand its operations this year.
The speculation arose on March 20 and 21, when users on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, expressed concerns about the company’s future. One user posted, “Chipotle is closing all restaurants & is declaring bankruptcy,” which garnered over 3,200 views. Another user remarked, “chipotle is closing. wtf,” contributing to mounting anxiety among customers.
The rumors originated from a misleading article published by Unión Rayo, which mischaracterized Chipotle’s decision to close its Farmesa Fresh concept as indicative of a shutdown of its primary business. Chipotle has confirmed that there are no plans to close locations to the extent assumed in these online discussions.
According to Chipotle’s media relations team, the company plans to open between 315 and 345 new restaurants in 2025, with approximately 80% of them including “Chipotlanes
