Chippewas Seek Road Win Against Struggling Zips in MAC Clash
AKRON, Ohio – The Central Michigan Chippewas, fresh off a victory, will face the Akron Zips in a Mid-American Conference (MAC) showdown on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at InfoCision Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
Central Michigan (3-2, 1-0 MAC) enters this game with momentum after defeating Eastern Michigan 24-13 last week. First-year head coach Matt Drinkall praised his team’s performance, particularly their strong rushing attack which totaled over 300 yards. “The players have been incredibly consistent through it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Akron (1-4, 0-1 MAC) is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 45-3 loss to Toledo. The Zips’ offense has struggled throughout the season, averaging just 7.75 points per game over their last four contests. For head coach Joe Moorhead, this week poses another challenge as they seek to improve on both sides of the ball.
The Chippewas have a potent rushing game, led by halfback Nahree Biggins, who has accumulated 242 yards and one touchdown this season. Quarterback Angel Flores also adds depth with 289 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Drinkall emphasized the importance of establishing their run game against Akron’s defense, which gives up an average of 182 yards per game.
Akron’s offense, on the other hand, has been hit hard by injuries, particularly quarterback Ben Finley, who missed last week’s game. If he cannot return, Michael Johnson Jr. will likely lead the team. Moorhead expressed his hope for Finley’s return, stating, “His ability to scramble and make plays will help an offense searching for answers.”
Despite their struggles, the Zips possess some offensive firepower, including running back Jordan Gant, who had a standout performance against Duquesne earlier this season with 161 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Defensively, both teams have shown the ability to create turnovers, with Central Michigan sitting 20th in the NCAA for turnovers gained. Safety Maddix Blackwell stated, “Just stick to what we’re good at and then we’ll be successful as long as we play hard.”
The Chippewas lead the all-time series against the Zips, 19-10-1, and have won the last three meetings. Both teams are looking to improve their standings in the MAC, making this matchup crucial for their season aspirations.
Saturday’s game promises to be competitive as both teams aim for a much-needed victory to boost their season.
