Chris Robinson, Beloved Soap Star, Dies at 86

SEDONA, Arizona – Chris Robinson, a celebrated actor known for his roles on daytime television, passed away on June 9, 2025, at the age of 86. He died peacefully in his sleep at his ranch near Sedona, Arizona, where he had been battling heart failure for some time. The news of his death was shared by his friend and collaborator, MJ Allen, on social media.
Robinson’s career spanned more than eight decades, earning him recognition for over 100 roles in film and television. He first gained fame as Technical Sergeant Sandy Komansky in the 1960s ABC drama 12 O'Clock High. However, it was his long-standing role as Dr. Rick Webber on ABC’s General Hospital that made him a household name.
He portrayed Dr. Webber from 1978 to 1986, returning briefly in 2002, when his character met a gruesome fate at the hands of Scotty Baldwin, played by Kin Shriner. Robinson also starred on CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful from 1992 to 2002, playing Jack Hamilton.
Robinson famously became associated with the catchphrase, “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV,” after appearing in a Vicks Formula 44 cough syrup commercial. This phrase turned into a cultural reference, although Robinson later faced a scandal over federal income tax evasion, which led to his dismissal from the campaign.
Born on November 5, 1938, in West Palm Beach, Florida, Robinson’s passion for acting emerged early. He made uncredited appearances in films like The Midnight Story (1957), before landing roles in productions such as The Diary of a High School Bride and Beast from Haunted Cave.
Throughout his career, Robinson appeared in numerous television shows, including Murder, She Wrote, Fantasy Island, and Another World, among many others. He directed and wrote films such as Catch the Black Sunshine and The Intruder, showcasing his multifaceted talents.
Robinson is survived by his wife Jacquie Shane-Robinson, his sons Shane, Coby, Christian, Taylor, and Christopher, along with his adopted son Robb Walker, and five grandchildren. His legacy in television and film will continue to be remembered by fans and loved ones.
