Christina Ricci Interview Hot Ones

LOS ANGELES, CA — Christina Ricci discussed her disappointment in losing the role of Matilda in the 1994 film ‘Léon: The Professional‘ to Natalie Portman during a recent appearance on First We Feast’s YouTube show ‘Hot Ones Versus’ with co-star Melanie Lynskey. The episode aired on March 11, 2025.

During a segment of the show, Lynskey asked Ricci about a role she regretted missing out on. Ricci responded candidly, recounting her experience at the age of 12. ‘I really wanted to be in ‘Léon: The Professional,’ but I was too common and healthy-looking,’ she said, reflecting on the reasons cited by casting directors.

In ‘Léon: The Professional,’ directed by Luc Besson, Portman played Matilda, a young girl who forms a bond with a hitman, played by Jean Reno, after her family is murdered. The film, despite controversies surrounding its themes, has become a cult classic since its release. Ricci’s audition is a noteworthy piece in the history of child actors competing for significant roles.

Ricci, known for her roles in films such as ‘Mermaids‘ and ‘The Addams Family,’ has had a prolific career spanning over three decades. The actress transitioned from child roles to more mature characters in works like ‘The Ice Storm‘ and ‘Buffalo '66.’ Most recently, she portrayed Misty in the critically acclaimed series ‘Yellowjackets,’ which is entering its third season.

Reflecting on her career, Ricci noted the market’s expectations for young actresses in the 1990s, describing it as a time with intense scrutiny and pressure. ‘The expectations are so different now, thank God,’ Ricci stated. ‘It’s great to be part of a show that explores complex themes around women and rage.’

While both Ricci and Portman have navigated their careers through various Hollywood challenges, their experiences as child actors provide a glimpse into the evolving nature of the film industry. Today, Ricci continues to receive acclaim for her performances, including earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for her role in ‘Yellowjackets.’

As ‘Yellowjackets’ continues to explore its dark narrative of survival and trauma set against dual timelines, Ricci’s character is portrayed as grappling with the psychological aftermath of a harrowing plane crash and its impact on their lives. The series has captivated audiences and critics alike, garnering nominations and impressive ratings on platforms such as Rotten Tomatoes.

In her conversation with Lynskey, Ricci expressed pride in her latest work, highlighting the importance of well-rounded, powerful female roles. ‘We’re finally getting to tell stories that really matter,’ she said.
