Cillian Murphy As Oppenheimer With Dutch Language Notes

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — Cillian Murphy’s Academy Award-winning performance in “Oppenheimer” was more than just a role—it was a staggering display of dedication. Murphy learned 30,000 words of Dutch for a single scene in the film, showcasing his unparalleled commitment to authenticity.

Murphy spent six months preparing for the role, exceeding the 57-day shoot. “You break it down and say, ‘Alright, we need to work on this today,’” Murphy told NBC Insider. He utilized recordings from cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, a Dutch native, to perfect his delivery.

Co-star Robert Downey Jr. recalled Murphy’s focus: “We’d say, ‘Hey, we got a three-day weekend. We’ll go antiquing in Santa Fe. What are you going to do?’ ‘Oh, I have to learn 30,000 words of Dutch. Have a nice time,’” Downey told People. “I have never witnessed a greater sacrifice by a lead actor in my career.”

Murphy’s physical transformation was equally demanding. Emily Blunt revealed his extreme routine: “Cillian had to [remove himself from the antics on set] because he had such a monumental undertaking. He could only eat an almond every day because he was so emaciated,” she told Extra.

Murphy’s efforts earned him critical acclaim and the Best Actor Oscar. Reflecting on his journey, every sacrifice, from skipped meals to memorized Dutch phrases, proved worth it for the haunting portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
