Club Brugge Faces Atalanta in Champions League Rematch
BRUGES, Belgium — Club Brugge travels to Bergamo this evening to take on Atalanta in the second match week of the UEFA Champions League. Last season, Club Brugge eliminated Atalanta in the knockout stage, winning both matches.
Head coach Nicky Hayen expressed confidence despite the team’s challenges. ‘They’ll be hungry for revenge after last season; we’re aware of that,’ Hayen said. ‘We have to be prepared for a fierce start from them. But of course, we also believe in our own chances.’
Club Brugge kicked off their Champions League campaign with a dominant 4-1 victory over Monaco, showcasing their strength. However, they will be without key player Frank Onyeka for this match, which could impact their performance.
Atalanta, who are adjusting to a new coach after Gian Piero Gasperini‘s departure to Roma, started their campaign with a disappointing 4-0 loss to PSG. Recently, they managed a 1-1 draw against Juventus, indicating challenges in their transition.
Hayen pointed out that Atalanta is in a period of change, which might work to Club Brugge’s advantage. ‘If you dig in here, they have enough quality to exploit that. We know what to do to hurt them,’ he added, emphasizing his team’s preparation and determination.
