Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka Advance to Wuhan Open Quarterfinals
Coco Gauff‘s impressive performance in China continues with a straightforward 6-4, 6-1 victory over Marta Kostyuk at the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open Round of 16. Following a successful week in Beijing, where she clinched the WTA 1000 China Open title, Gauff maintains her winning streak under new coach Matt Daly.
“I’m really happy with how I played today,” stated Gauff post-match. “It was a pretty straightforward match. Marta and I always have some good battles. Today I was able to get through in straight sets.” The match lasted just 61 minutes, with Gauff capitalizing on Kostyuk’s errors, including several double faults.
On the same day, No. 2 seed Jessica Pegula fell to local favorite Wang Xinyu, marking the second time Pegula has been bested by Wang this year. Wang, ranked 51st, impressed with a 6-3, 7-5 win, advancing to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.
Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka, a previous Wuhan Open winner, overcame a challenging start against Yulia Putintseva. Sabalenka trailed early, losing the first set 6-1, but rallied back to secure a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory, continuing her unblemished record in Wuhan.
Gauff now faces World No. 45 Magda Linette, who defeated No. 8 seed Daria Kasatkina with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. “That match, it’s so long ago,” Gauff remarked about their last meeting at the 2021 US Open. “She’s a tough opponent. She’s been playing great matches here in Wuhan.”
In other results, Ekaterina Alexandrova prepares to face Wang Xinyu next, with significant attention on Wang as she competes on home soil. With top seeds falling throughout the tournament, the stage is set for potentially unexpected finalists.
The Wuhan Open, a part of the WTA 1000 series, continues to draw attention as players vie for the prestigious title. High-profile players, including Sabalenka and Gauff, add to the excitement as the tournament progresses towards the finals.
