Colbert Jokes About Trump Voters’ Buyer’s Remorse Over Egg Prices

NEW YORK, Feb. 28, 2025 — Stephen Colbert aired his thoughts about supporters of former President Donald Trump experiencing buyer’s remorse during an episode of “The Late Show” on Thursday. The reaction comes amid rising grocery prices, particularly for eggs, a staple in many households.
Colbert referenced remarks from a Republican pollster who indicated that many Trump voters are reconsidering their choices. Colbert quipped, “Kinda hard to feel a lot of sympathy for them. They ordered the turd soup and then said, ‘Waiter, there’s turds in my soup.’ Then they came back four years later and asked, ‘Y’all still have that turd soup?’”
The comedian underscored the frustrations among voters, noting that Trump had pledged to decrease prices on his first day back in office. Despite these promises, Colbert emphasized that prices continue to climb, especially for common breakfast items like eggs.
“One thing that continues to make consumers anxious is the high price of breakfast, and with bird flu, there’s no end in sight,” Colbert remarked. He added that experts predict a potential 41% increase in egg prices, humorously declaring, “This year’s Easter egg hunt is going to be the Purge.”
Colbert further illustrated the financial strain on consumers by highlighting how some New York bodegas have begun selling individual eggs, referred to as “loosie eggs,” for those unable to afford full cartons. “Yum, loose eggs. And if you can’t afford those, there’s a guy in the alley in the back,” he joked, riffing on the notion of black-market eggs.
In a comedic twist, Colbert reported that customs agents have intercepted at least 90 individuals attempting to smuggle eggs into the country, cheekily suggesting that the head of the smuggling operation could be named “Pablo Eggs-Cobar.” An animated chicken appeared on-screen to applaud Colbert’s humor, to which he responded, “Thanks, Clucky. That’s our newest staff member. Clucky, the joke judging chicken. Thank you for your service, Clucky.”
Colbert’s segment provided a humorous critique of the intersection between politics and consumer economics. You can view Colbert’s full monologue on CBS’s website.
