Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson Spotted Together in Mumbai Amid Tour
MUMBAI, India — Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and actress Dakota Johnson were photographed together in Mumbai on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, putting an end to recent breakup rumors. The couple, seen holding hands and smiling, enjoyed a rare public outing as Martin continues his band’s sold-out Music of the Spheres World Tour in India.
Martin, 47, dressed casually in a gray long-sleeved shirt, black pants, and white sneakers, while Johnson, 35, wore a black tank midi dress paired with a gray sweater tied around her waist and black sneakers. The pair, first linked in 2017, have maintained a relatively private relationship, occasionally sparking speculation about their status.
In March 2024, a source told PEOPLE that the couple had discussed marriage but were “in no rush.” Breakup rumors surfaced again last summer, but a source close to the couple dismissed them, stating they were “happily together.” Martin later referred to Johnson as one of the most important people in his life during a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, though he emphasized the importance of keeping their relationship private.
Martin is currently in India with Coldplay, performing multiple shows as part of their global tour. The band last visited India nine years ago, and their return has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm. Two shows in Ahmedabad are expected to draw over 100,000 attendees each night, reflecting the growing demand for live music in the country.
India’s music industry is experiencing significant growth, with the live music market valued at 19 billion rupees (£178 million) in 2021 and projected to reach 37 billion rupees (£346 million) by 2026. Dr. Sourindra Banerjee, a marketing professor at Leeds University Business School, attributes this growth to India’s youthful population, making it an attractive market for international artists.
Local artists, such as pop/folk singer Anoushka Maskey and independent singer-songwriter Anumita Nadesan, see the influx of global stars as an opportunity for collaboration and visibility. However, some worry about the potential overshadowing of homegrown talent. Music journalist Peony Hirwani notes that while international acts can boost local artists’ careers, India needs improved infrastructure to attract top-tier performers like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
Coldplay’s Mumbai performances mark a significant moment for India’s music scene, signaling a shift toward greater global recognition and collaboration.
