Comedian Ali Wong Opens Up About Her Post-Divorce Romance with Fellow Actor
Renowned comedian Ali Wong has shared insights into her burgeoning romance with fellow comedian and actor Bill Hader, highlighting how their relationship has evolved following her divorce. Wong divulged details about her courtship with Hader in her recent stand-up comedy special, which premiered on Netflix.
According to sources, including USA TODAY, Wong and Hader have been a consistent couple since April 2023, following a brief dating period in the fall of 2022. Their relationship began after Wong’s divorce from ex-husband Justin Hakuta in 2022.
Wong, in her comedy special, humorously reflected on her post-divorce life. “I think for the longest time, I was so focused on getting someone who I consider talented, someone who makes me laugh,” she said, underscoring the rarity of finding a partner with whom she has a real connection.
The comedian mentioned the media’s widespread coverage of her divorce, which initially left her feeling embarrassed, swiftly turned into a beacon for interested suitors, one of whom was Hader. As she recounted in a comedic tone, she received a call from an acquaintance who candidly expressed interest, marking the beginning of Hader’s pursuit.
Shortly after this declaration, Wong traveled to Europe, where Hader made his affections clear through a series of grand romantic gestures. Wong revealed that upon her arrival in London, she was greeted with a bouquet of flowers from Hader, an act he repeated with increasing extravagance at her next stops in Amsterdam, Cologne, and Copenhagen.
Reflecting on these gestures, Wong humorously noted that while her girlfriends were envious, her male friends viewed Hader’s actions skeptically, summarizing a broader sentiment about contemporary romantic gestures.
Apart from her relationship revelations, Wong also opened up about her personal life during an interview for InStyle. She spoke about her experience as a mother to daughters Nikki Alex and Mari Justin, aged 6 and 8, whom she shares with Hakuta. Wong emphasized the importance of the support she receives, particularly from her mother, as she navigates the challenges of parenting alongside her comedy career.
Wong credited her financial success for enabling her to involve her children in her career, highlighting her ability to take her daughters on tour. “I was so fortunate that by the time I was going on tour, I could pay for my kids to come with me,” she said, noting how it allowed them to explore America together.
The comedian described her life as a balance between performing at night and being present for her daughters during the day, illustrating a fulfilling yet demanding lifestyle. “Every single morning I make my kids lunch. I pick them up every day after school,” Wong detailed, emphasizing her commitment to maintaining family time.
