Controversy Brews Over 'jnu: Jahangir National University' Movie Poster, Sfi Calls It Defamatory

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has raised objections against the poster of the upcoming movie ‘JNU: Jahangir National University’, labeling it as defamatory and propaganda. The controversy surrounds the sharing of the poster on social media by actor Urvashi Rautela, sparking debates and discussions.

Scheduled for release on April 5, the movie poster emerged just days ahead of the student body elections at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The student polls are set for March 22, with results to be announced on March 24, adding intensity to the ongoing debate stirred by the film poster.

In response to the poster, SFI’s JNU unit secretary Sagar condemned the movie as a work of propaganda aimed at tarnishing the institute’s reputation. The student body plans to address the matter with the university administration to seek their intervention regarding the contentious film.

‘Jahangir National University’, written and directed by Vinay Sharma, has faced backlash for its choice of name, coinciding with the acronym of JNU along with alleged elements of Islamophobia. The SFI has refused to acknowledge the movie by its name and called for the university Vice-Chancellor to take a definitive stance on the issue.

Challenging the opposing party ABVP, SFI questioned their stance on the movie and its narrative, which is perceived to cast students in a negative light. The film’s plot, as per its IMDB page, centers around the character Sourabh Sharma, a JNU student disillusioned by what is portrayed as ‘anti-national’ activities of the Left wing on campus, featuring a character resembling a prominent student leader, Arushi Ghosh.

The filmmaker Vinay Sharma has remained silent on the controversies surrounding the movie, refusing to address queries related to the resemblance of characters to real-life individuals. The unfolding story of ‘JNU: Jahangir National University’ continues to spark debates and discussions within the educational and entertainment realms.
