Controversy Grows Over Bella Ramsey’s Role in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2

AUSTIN, Texas — The anticipation for HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 has sparked controversy among fans, particularly regarding the casting of Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Despite being 21 years old, some audiences express concerns that Ramsey does not visually align with the five-year time jump in Ellie’s character arc.
The popular video game adaptation sees Ellie, originally 14 years old in Season 1, transition to a 19-year-old in the forthcoming season. Critics argue that Ramsey’s youthful appearance may hinder the representation of Ellie’s growth, both physically and emotionally. Ramsey was 19 during the filming of Season 2, yet her height and build remain unchanged, standing at 5 feet, 1 inch.
Craig Mazin, co-creator and showrunner of the series, addressed these concerns in a recent interview. He expressed confidence in his casting choice, highlighting that he values Ellie’s emotional development over physical representation. “Ellie in the game looks much older. Some people do change quite dramatically, and some people don’t,” Mazin explained. “I’m not interested in the physical aspect. I’m interested in the emotional maturity, and the change in personality.”
Mazin further emphasized that his focus is on depicting the nuances of character growth rather than strict adherence to the source material’s visual expectations. “I’ve watched Bella grow and become independent and start to find her own two feet separate from her parents,” he remarked, indicating that viewers will witness significant evolution in Ellie’s character in this new season.
Despite the backlash, several cast additions aim to enhance the storytelling, including Isabella Merced, who plays Dina, a character described as a “contrast” to Ellie’s tough demeanor. Mazin specified that he wanted someone with a brighter presence to complement Ramsey’s performance, as he aims to create meaningful character dynamics. “We wanted somebody who is radiating sun,” he mentioned. “We also didn’t want somebody that was 5’9’’ because Bella is pretty short.”
In a world where small characters face significant challenges, Mazin disclosed that he plans to address this disparity by incorporating jiu-jitsu into fight scenes, an approach he believes reflects survival in the series’ brutal environment. “How does a small person fight with a big person? It’s not going to be karate; they’ll lose,” he said. “The answer is jiu-jitsu.”
The new season, which premieres on HBO and Max on Sunday, April 13, will consist of seven episodes. Production has expanded its horizons, allowing for greater narrative complexity and character exploration.
The return of Pedro Pascal as Joel alongside Ramsey has fans hopeful for a continuation of the compelling dynamics introduced in the first season. As the show delves into Ellie’s struggles and relationships, viewers remain curious about how the storyline will resonate with both fans of the game and new audiences.
Ultimately, Mazin remains optimistic: “When they watch this year, I think they’re going to see the difference.”
