The Miss South Africa contest is facing a whirlwind of controversy after contestant Chidimma Adetshina’s eligibility came under scrutiny. Chidimma, who hails from Pimville in Soweto, is making waves as she gets closer to the crown, but her mixed heritage is raising eyebrows.

Born at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital to a Nigerian father and a mother from Mozambique, Chidimma has sparked debates on social media where users are questioning her right to compete. Despite her South African citizenship, many are voicing concerns, claiming she may not represent the nation adequately.

The organizers of Miss South Africa have stood by Chidimma, stating that she meets all the necessary criteria to participate. They assured the public that her documents have been thoroughly vetted, confirming that she is indeed a South African citizen.

Things heated up further when a video surfaced online showing Chidimma celebrating with friends, some dressed in Nigerian traditional outfits. This led to calls for intervention from various public figures, including the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who expressed his discomfort, stating that Nigerians should not compete in the Miss South Africa pageant.

In contrast, EFF leader Julius Malema defended Chidimma, asserting that citizenship is determined by birth, not heritage. He emphasized that Chidimma’s situation highlights issues of identity that are often misrepresented in society.

With the grand finale of Miss South Africa approaching and the pressure mounting, a petition has been launched urging the organization to disqualify Chidimma. Regardless of the outcome, this situation has ignited crucial conversations about nationality, heritage, and representation.
