Couple Transforms Inherited French Chateau on HGTV’s ‘Castle Impossible’

Paris, France — In a remarkable journey, Daphne Reckert and Ian Figueira went from aspiring homeowners seeking a minimalist tiny home in California to inheriting a historic 500-year-old chateau just outside Paris. Their experiences are now chronicled in HGTV‘s ‘Castle Impossible.’
The couple inherited the property in 2020, which has since provided endless opportunities for high-stakes renovations aimed at preserving its rich history. ‘Castle Impossible’ invites viewers into their world as they tackle the challenges of remaking the chateau while respecting its past.
Reckert emphasized their commitment to keeping the chateau’s character intact. ‘The chateau and all the buildings have been built over the last few centuries,’ she noted. ‘We try to keep a cohesiveness throughout the design. We are inspired by the various renovations that have already taken place.’
In their decorating process, the couple maintained a strict budget. Reckert explained that they were patient while searching for items that wouldn’t exceed their financial limits, ensuring every piece fits their vision of a lived-in and cozy environment.
The chateau’s restoration efforts were not undertaken alone. Family and friends played significant roles, with ‘Uncle Tony’, an English handyman, and Allison, a friend who stepped in as the interior designer. ‘It takes a village—especially a castle in France,’ Figueira quipped, highlighting the importance of community in their renovation journey.
Art Nouveau design influence figures prominently in their vision for the interior spaces, especially the solar, where the family lived. Reckert and Allison explored 1800s architectural details hidden beneath years of neglect, uncovering stunning oak features and restoring them to their former glory.
One of their favorite transformed areas, the solar, was formerly overtaken by decay, but now blends contemporary and historical elements, showcasing gold accents alongside original iron railings.
Looking ahead, the couple might even restore a historic moat into a pond, contributing even more to the castle’s charm. Reckert shared their hopes of creating an artisan craftsman space for the public, promoting workshops and community events to celebrate the castle’s vibrant atmosphere.
Catch ‘Castle Impossible’ every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV, with episodes available for streaming on Max and discovery+ the following day.
