A major fire engulfed the renowned Covered Bridge Potato Chips Factory in Hartland, leading to extensive destruction of the facility. The incident, reported to authorities around 6 p.m., prompted a swift response from multiple fire departments and law enforcement agencies, including the RCMP. Fortunately, all 20 to 30 employees present on-site were safely evacuated as the flames rapidly consumed the building.

The inferno raged on well into the night, with onlookers like Summerville resident Kelly Gillin noting the tragic loss. Gillin, who observed the blaze from a distance, expressed shock and grief at the devastation, emphasizing that the structure was virtually reduced to ruins. Firefighting teams from Hartland, Woodstock, Lakeville, and Florenceville-Bristol were among those mobilized to combat the flames, with additional support from the RCMP and local police for traffic management.

Situated near the Trans-Canada Highway close to the St. John River, the Covered Bridge Potato Chips Factory has been a cornerstone of the community, particularly under the leadership of the Albright family. Founded by brothers Matt and Ryan Albright in 2004 as a potato distribution enterprise before expanding into the potato chip market in 2009, the factory represented a fourth-generation family farming business, cultivating over 500 acres of potatoes annually for chip production.

Mayor Tracey DeMerchant of Hartland expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the factory as a cherished establishment that significantly contributed to the town. She pledged unwavering support for the Albright family during this challenging period and highlighted the strong community ties that the business fostered over the years.

Gillin recounted how the overwhelming blaze emitted thick smoke that permeated the valley, underscoring the significant challenge faced by firefighters in containing the fire.
