Craig Melvin Takes Break from Today Show, Mike Tirico Fills In

NEW YORK, NY — Craig Melvin, co-anchor of NBC‘s ‘Today’ show, is taking a short break starting the week of April 14, 2025, leaving viewers curious about his absence. Melvin, who stepped into the role in January 2025 after Hoda Kotb‘s departure, will enjoy a family vacation during the Easter break.
Melvin’s break was announced by fellow co-anchor Savannah Guthrie on April 10, who confirmed he would be away spending time with his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, and their children, son Delano and daughter Sybil. “He’s a great dad,” Delano shared during an appearance on the show.
In Melvin’s absence, sports commentator Mike Tirico will take over co-hosting duties for the week. Tirico humorously noted during the announcement that he is excited to fill Melvin’s shoes, adding, “Melvin showed he can host the Olympics, so if we can try to go for an even trade here, I’m looking forward to being with y’all next week.”
Fans have expressed their enthusiasm for Tirico’s temporary role. Comments on the official ‘Today’ Instagram page reveal a mix of excitement and anticipation. “Have a great vacation, Craig, but having Mike fill in will be fun to watch!” was one of many supportive messages.
Melvin’s co-host, Guthrie, also stressed that the break was much deserved, highlighting Melvin’s dedication since he joined ‘Today’. “He has provided so many memorable moments since he joined our morning team,” she noted.
The expected return date for Melvin is the week of April 21, 2025. In previous interviews, Melvin described joining the ‘Today’ show as “the professional honor of a lifetime,” reflecting on the impact and reach of the program. “You don’t fully grasp the magnitude until you experience it,” he remarked.
Fans can expect to see Melvin back soon while they enjoy Tirico’s guest hosting in the meantime.
